Do Senate Staffers Know Israel’s Past?

An expose in Politico last week revealed that Congressional staffers, on behalf of Catholic Relief Services, had reached out to the Israeli military to get a commitment to not bomb a particular church and convent in Gaza. Here is what the effort looked like:

The emails, which are dated Oct. 14 through Oct. 26, show that Catholic Relief Services sent the coordinates of a number of buildings to Senate staffers, who forwarded them to the Israeli military. The congressional aides confirm in the messages that Israel received the list of coordinates for four buildings, including the two that were later struck, but the Israeli officials told them they “can’t guarantee” the safety of the dozens of civilians inside.

Hm…. surely, Senate staffers know a little about Israel, right?

Like, this is the same government that has a long and storied history in specifically targeting civilians who wave white flags (and only got in trouble recently when those civilians were Israelis). And relishes in going after disabled civilians?

Fifty-seven-year-old Kamal Zghair, a wheelchair-bound man who was shot and then run over by IDF tanks on April 10 as he was moving in his wheelchair equipped with a white flag down a major road in Jenin;

Thirty-seven-year-old Jamal Fayid, a paralyzed man, who was crushed in the rubble of his home on April 7 after IDF soldiers refused to allow his family the time to remove him from their home before a bulldozer destroyed it;

So. guess, what happened after Israel was informed about the location of the Christian religious sites in Gaza? The convent was bombed. As for the church, an Israeli sniper located a mother and daughter there, and killed them.

Apparently, Hamas was near the buildings.

As the eight nights of Hanukkah wrapped up, thousands of Jewish-Americans concerned about Israel’s relentless massacres of civilians in Gaza marched in several eight major cities across the U.S., from Atlanta and Philadelphia to Seattle and Portland. As far as their goal, it was simple.

[Activists] blocked traffic for hours, singing, chanting, carrying giant menorahs, and holding signs reading “Jews says ceasefire now” and “Let Gaza live.” Hundreds were arrested.

Our message is clear: As long as Israel is dropping bombs on Gaza, there can be no business as usual.

In just over two months, over 19,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. Over 7,000 of them were children.

The question remains: what will it take for the consciences of U.S. lawmakers to wake up.

Labor leaders stood outside of Congress yesterday repeating demands for an end to the war on Gaza. Representatives from the UAW, American Postal Workers Union and the United Electrical Workers stood alongside several progressive Congresspeople, including Cori Bush (D-Missouri), Rashid Tlaib (D-Michigan), and Ro Khanna (D-California) to push for H.Res. 786, a ceasefire bill in Congress.

UAW President Shawn Fain, fresh from a historic labor contract victory against the Big Three automakers, said, “We cannot bomb our way to peace,” and that, “The only path forward is to build peace and social justice through a ceasefire.”

The massacre of civilians in Gaza has reached an unspeakable level. Indigenous women, children, and babies sheltering inside of a school were killed, execution-style, by Israeli soldiers, according to witness testimonies in the last 24 hours.

Props to the four Senators whose general commitment to human rights comes through in the form of a call for a ceasefire, as of December 14, 2023. They are:

  • Dick Durbin (D-Oregon)
  • Jeffrey Merkley (D-Oregon)
  • Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachussetts)
  • Peter Welch (D-Vermont)
